The 1st workshop on hydration mechanisms and characterization of low carbon cements and concrete, jointly organized by UC Berkeley and EPFL, took place between August 10th and 13th, 2026 in Berkeley, CA.

Topics included:

• Cement hydration mechanisms
• Low carbon cement formulation
• X-ray diffraction
• Electron microscopy
• Isothermal calorimetry
• Thermodynamic modelling
• Physical analysis of powders (PSD, SSA)
• Low carbon concrete mixture design

The workshop included theoretical discussions and practical sessions within the SCiM laboratory facilities at the UC Berkeley campus.
